production log

January 14, 2010

Today me, Christina and Kim uploaded our video footage on to the macs so that we could begin to edit, as Elliott our other team member had an exam,

We then edited our second advert and added transitions to this we also researched and found good music that suited the advert this was called ‘bird song’ by Florence and the machine.

We had difficulties with someone moving and changing our film clips this was a problem because it set us behind but we got back on track and nearly got the video edited we need to show our peers to get feed back and make any changes they think will be needed in order to make our film very good.

Production log (as promised)

December 28, 2009

Today as me, Elliott and Christina worked very hard to finish off our advert so that we had one peice completed. Me and Elliott went across to town to buy two perfume bottles for men and women we thought they were very sucessful when we brought them the same bottle just different colourings. We took them back to show the group and they we’re very happy.

We began to cut out lables that Elliott had earlier designed, so put them on the bottles and asked someone in the class who does photography to take some pictures for us. We set up our own make shift studio on the floor using white paper to make a surrounding and this worked very well the photos were very good and gave off the impression of sophistication.

There was one problem with this though and this was the fact that the lids for the bottles were very unatractive so we decided not  to use them, when taking photos as they did not reflect the audience that we wanted this being sophistication, they made the bottle look very cheap and teenage but with out the lids the looked as we wanted.

We brought some food die to turn turn the perfum a different colour, so that you could see they were for men and women, so we choose a blue food die for the mens and green for the girls, but we later realised as our advert was in colour we would not need the dye as you would not be able to see it. Me, Elliott and Christina decided to go ahead and put the blue dye in one of the perfume bottles because we now needed to make sure that one was clearly a different shade from the other and by adding the blue dye to one when put next to each other, when the photos were taken one bottle looked black and one looked white.

The image of our perfume bottle was very important to our group and the bottle used for many perfumes represent the type of audience they want for their product, keeping with the sophisticated look we felt black and white was till the most important representation. By introducing colour to our advert, this would mean making sure we are still aiming for the specific audience and this would be difficult.

Once we had taken the photos we then uploaded them to the computer and looked through them. Me, Elliott and Christina choose the photos that we thought would be the best. Elliott then took the images and inserted them on to final cut pro were we had nearly finished editing the perfume advert,  he inserted them and added a transition affect the advert looked very sophisticated and exactly what we wanted our group was very happy with the final product.

All throughout we kept in mind our target audience, to make sure that we was meeting the sort of neededs this audience would want from a perfume image.

To make sure we have met this, after our christmas break we need to make a questionaire, that we can hand out to our teachers to see if they would buy this product just from seeing the advert or if they think they would remember the advert as this is key in media, to selling a product.

We also have to ask teachers because we know that the target audience we are aiming for is older than our peers and therefor although asking our peers what they think about the advert, we need to know from a consumer point of view. This would be from 21-30 age so we are going to ask some of our men and women teachers that are in this age range to get a consumer audience feedback. This is very important because if it is not the sort of thing the majority of them would buy or look at and feel this is for them, changes may be needed.

This will be a great way before we have our coursework in to make any last minute changes, to make sure that our target audience has been met and if it hasn’t we will either have to change the audience for a more suitible purpose. Our feedback may also help us to add or take away shoots the target audience think are not nesicerily needed.

We now have got one perfume advert finished and are going to start putting the other advert together when we get back from our christmas holidays, we are on time with our coursework and think that the time we have to make the next advert will be sufficient in making it to the same high quality standards as the one we have already completed.

Editing screen grabs

December 10, 2009

These photos show the editing that has been done for our perfume advert by our group member Elliott Bass, we has used all his skills that he has learnt over the last year and a half along with peer and group influences to create what I think is a very good advert.

Editing is difficult at the best of times you need to make the best of the shoots you have got with different editing techniques and transitions. There has been further problems than what would normally occur as stating before when filming we had a problem, the fact that our teacher did not give us the adaptor for the tri-pod and therefore I the camera-lady had to use the camera on steady cam setting the whole time, this made some of our shoots very shaking and some of the shoots taken we could not even use because the quality was so bad. Elliott researched into many different techniques to try to take away some of the shakiness on the shoots but this did not always work. So editing was very difficult but Elliott did a brilliant job.

Elliott will be writing about the editing as his role is editor.

photos of perfume bottle

December 10, 2009

These are the pictures of the perfume bottles that we produced in order to finish one of our perfume adverts before christmas. The pictures are very professional, but some had problems with the other writing that was on the bottle that we could not get off showing through, so these will need to be edited on photoshop before using in our perfume advert to make sure the are the same quality standards as the rest of our advert.

Elliott has now infact edited some of these pictures shown above in order to insert into the advert, so that they are almost perfect in there look again Elliott has used all his skills to make the best of all the images and footage to make something that is of a good quality.

26th november- lost and found

December 10, 2009

On the day of November 26th me and Kim met up at college and went to see Andrea our Media teacher to make sure it was still ok to film and that the camera Kim had brought from home would connect it to the tripod and to the Mac computer which we would be using to edit the footage on.

Also Kim wanted to see if there was any available spare batteries, as he camera was kept changing how much battery space it had left. So we got a spare battery for back up.

We meet up with our other team members Christina and Elliott and Lauren (who was going to be our actress) for the day. This is where the fashion and mise-en-scene started, Lauren started to apply her make-up and style her hair, for what was needed to have the correct look in the advert.

Lauren got ready on the train to Westminster to save time, so that when we got there and had to meet Ben, we could start to film straight away.

When we got to London Lauren had to get changed as it was freezing and she was wearing a dress, during winter. We did not want our actress to get cold as it was down to us to keep the save and fair wellbeing.

We met Ben outside Westminster train station who was already dressed in his suit so we could start to film straight away.

We went across the road to film our first shot, of a man coming out of a train station, where we discover our first problem, that Andreas our teacher did not give us the adaptor that was meant to be with the tripod to attach it to the camera, so had to continue filming throughout the day using steady cam.

A second problem that was quite difficult as camera woman, was to film because of people walking in between and during shots, but we still managed to work around this and get the shot needed.

Although the shot was not as perfect as we wanted it to be because of the natural glare of the sun behind the shot, we had to continue best would could to get the filming completed and on time.

I and Kim worked together on the camera angles best we could without a tripod to create the same affect and picture that we had designed in storyboards together. I tried best to get a variety of angles but without a tripod there is only so much that could be done.

Christina worked very well with our actors Ben and Lauren, she was telling them there role and when I had started filming so they knew when to come on. She also organized costumes and make-up for the actors.

Elliott was not needed during filming because his role was editor but he came along to help with views and opinions that would help us to create the best footage to edit, as we were working as a very tight group all our views on the angles and shots were very important from production to producing to editing, all of our groups needs to have their imput.

During filming on the 26th November it was often cold and even started to rain at one part, we stopped filming gave our actors and umbrella and got them a hot drink so they would not get ill and were well looked after. Elliott also lent his jacket to our actor Lauren so that she was not cold. So all in all we tried to look out for our actors best we could with the resources we had.

I think that without the tripod adaptor we were restricted, looking back at the footage I took, I got as many different shots that I could as steady as I could.

I know that with the adapter the filming I did would have been steadier and of a better quality I did not have this option at the time of filming and had to use all my skills from previous film and media work to the best out of a bad situation.

5th December- Bisous

December 10, 2009

I could not make filming on the 5th of December due to the fact i was ill, but Kim and Christina continued without me. Elliott could not get the time off work so it was down to the other two members in the group. Although not very practical that me and Elliott were not able to go, the room that was being used to film in was very small and would have been very claustrophobic with four members of the group plus two actors.

Me and Kim had produced the story boards together before hand, so we knew exactly what we needed to create the right representation of advert. We had also discussed the mise-en-scene and camera angles before production so although I was not able to go, Christina and Kim could still film they had all the skills they needed to continue with filming they had used the camera before last year in their media coursework so have good skills.

Christina apparently acted as production manager, in charge of props, actors and mise-en-scene.

Although it didn’t go to plan apparently with the room being very small restricting camera angles, they still got the shots needed and conformed to conventions of the 180% rule. Also as it was a dull day, the lighting was poor and often dark, this is not what was originally wanted, as soft lighting was needed to create the mise-en-scene of romance but still seemed to work well and have got all the shots and footage needed for Elliott to edit with.

In addition although not going to plan, as many filming sessions don’t you just have to work the best you can with the footage you have and try to do something creative with it by the way it is edited either using transitions or cuts. This will be down to Elliott who has had many days experience with final cut pro, the software we will be using.

Individual jobs roles for each team memeber;

Producer:   This is Kim, in this role she will be in charge of booking equipment, making certain that all forms are filled in before we begin to shooting the TV advertisement, that the actors know when and where they are required. She will also have to check the weather forecast so that we know ifs its a day that we need for a certain mise-enscene and also film for continuity reasons.

Camera Woman: This will be me and I will be in charge of all filming and making sure everything looks right,  are creates the spersific mise-en-scene we are looking for as well as  also saying whether the lighting is creating the right atmosphere for the scene.

Director: Christina, she will make sure that the story boards we create to film are followed and that the actors are are in the correct position  for each shot, she will be in charge of the way they are acting and what they need to do in the scene being filmed also checking that continuity is displayed throughout.

Editor/Sound: Elliott, will edit the final product and researching into the sound we will be using in the perfume advert along with knowledge of what will create the right atmosphere, for example if we are going to be using a romantic mise-en-scence we would need the music to match, and therefore not any music would go with this.

Filming on the 26th of November

December 1, 2009

On the 26th of November after all the problems we had with our auditions, we finally had our actors Lauren and Ben, who turned up in the costumes we needed them too. They came in the clothing that is on the moodboard they looked very good and we began to film. It was very successful, we had a great day of filming although we came across a major problem that we had to sort out. We did not have the adapter that was needed for the tripod so we had to film everything by steady cam. Although we did the best we could with filming a lot of it is not steady and we will have to edit round this problem as there was nothing we could do as when booking out the equipment it was all a meant to be there but we did not relies until we got to London that we did not have this.

We had to try to keep continuity, because we did not know, how the whether was going to be. We stopped filming during the rain so that we would keep continuity. Overall we the filming went well. We got a lot of film to choose from to make our advert, we will have to take out the shaky bits so that it looks professional.

When filming, in and out of the trees we needed to make this not cheesy and therefor had to take several shots so that it did not look like, Ben was stalking Lauren but trying to find his love!

19th November problems with actors and filming

December 1, 2009

19th November 2009

Things haven’t gone to plan as first expected, time was becoming very short and we had worries about weather we would be able to film on the day we had planned. This was due to the people who had auditioned no being able to turn up when they said they would or not getting back to us about weather they could film of now.

We still hadn’t heard back from the email I sent to the royal park police, Kim sent another email along with the one I sent a few weeks ago, as it was getting closer to the date that we would be filming but we still hadn’t heard back so we went ahead a filmed anyway and took a copy of the email so that if we were asked about our filming we could show them that we had contacted the Royal park police but not got anything back.

We decided to film during our lesson of media, so that it would be convenient for all of us, Ben Slater, was free on thursdays as he was in our media lesson so this made it easy to film. Filiz Hassan was meant to be filming on the 26th with Ben but pulled out last moment so we had to ask one of our other friends Lauren who’s pictures are on the audition posts. She was very pretty and exactly what we was looking for.

So along with audition being a problem, and us having to get ours actors with in 24 hours, another problem was the weather,  we took a gamble and filmed, even though it was in november and you can never rely on the whether, because we did not want to fall behind so we went ahead and started to film the whether was fine for most of the day, until it rained but we stopped filming during this time and waited till it blew over then the sun came out again.

We want to film Bisous on 5th December using Lewis Coventry and Samantha Swingle. Both our actors should be free so this should be fine to go ahead and film.
Scince we have both our actors now it is down to Kim to inform the rest of the group and filming cast where to be and when to be there. We know our location is going to be at Christina’s but we just need to make sure our actors can be there when we need them to and make sure they can get there on time.
